Yesterday I started a series on what I believed are the essential tools needed for better preparedness for blogging today. #1 was Google. You may want to read that one through, there are items that you may need to get your site verified, crawled, and indexed.
2. Facebook
I hate to say it (because I'm afraid of the Matrix), but anybody who wants to actually be successful will have to play nice with Facebook. The opportunity to connect with even a fraction of 500 million users is enticing and a smart move.
Remember those forms blogs and other marketing websites would try to trick you into filling out? Y'know it has your address, name, phone number, zip code etc. You don't truly NEED those anymore... People give away that info on their facebook page. All that you need is a field in your comment form or signup that asks for a facebook url, those who participate get added to your list, those who don't didn't want to participate anyway.
Ads don't point you to their own web portals anymore, they point you to their official facebook page where it's easy to mine your data, and tailor their marketing strategy from their monitors.
You really have to do your homework here. You can't just create a community and hope that it flourishes. You have to communicate and connect and do special things to keep interest. Because they can always go play Farmville or Mafia Wars. Keep them connected to your blog. Zuckerberg is NOT sharing those billions with you! I posted the essential Facebook hook-ups for your blog in the community, get active.
